Writing

I studied and received my B.A. in Comparative English Literature and Political Science at the University of Virginia. Both curriculums required an extensive amount of writing, debating, editing and researching. My courses didn’t afford me much of an opportunity to dig deep into my creative scope, but when a chance to write prose was offered, I quickly pulled my purple pen out.

A short stint at the University’s Latino magazine began my adventures in creative writing.

Then, an irresistible and unexpected opportunity presented itself in early 2005. A friend and world-renowned photographer introduced me to a travel magazine editor during a photo shoot for a book on which they were collaborating. This is when being at the right place, at the right time impeccably expresses how life can change and lends itself to creating permanent fixtures. The editor asked me if I’d ever published any work. My honest answer was ‘No.’ I immediately made it clear that I’d spent time writing in college and that my dual degree required a lot of time sitting staring at my then antiquated computer and working with words. Not to mention rewriting my 40-page Senior Thesis in 10 hours after the initial draft disappeared in an inexplicable DOS computer crash.

One week later, I was on my first professional writing assignment, on a pres trip to Taos, New Mexico.

Since that chance encounter, I’ve been a freelance writer for Odyssey Couleur (and other local and national publications), which have taken me to fabulous destinations throughout the Caribbean, Europe, Mexico and the Continental United States.  That single meeting with the magazine’s editor kicked off my writing career.

I currently author the food column for Latina Magazine, the world’s 2nd largest Latin publication and am a contributing writer for Dean & DeLuca’s ‘Gourmet Blog.’ Both gigs allow me to write beyond extravagant press tours around the world. Through them, I have the wonderful task of covering culinary trends, music haps, artists, travel destinations and haute lifestyle. I love being able to say I’ve contributed to The Washington Post and am currently working on my first cookbook. I wonder daily why it’s not been yet picked up. But I am patient and know it will, so until then, I’ll continue to read the dictionary every day (because being verbose in at least 3 languages is mandatory in what I do) and stay away from dubious, slangy neologisms, only because my father (a veteran journalist) is my most demanding critic and best editor!
